Know the trail before you ride.

Managing your own super raises questions nobody answers clearly.

Every SMSF trustee hits the same wall - real questions that deserve better than a blog post or a chatbot summary.

"I get paid fortnightly. Does it matter when I actually buy the ETFs?"

"Everyone says to rebalance, but when I sell I pay tax. Is it actually worth it?"

"I have $200,000 to roll over from my old fund. All at once or gradually?"

"I keep reading about different ETF combinations. How do I know which suits me?"

These questions have answers. Someone already did the research.

Learn how it actually works

Four books built from proper research, written with AI as a thinking partner. Start at the index and work your way to a live ASX listing.

Start with the index, not the ETF

Every ETF tracks an index - but most people skip straight to the product. The first book builds a stock index from scratch in a fictional Australian town, connects it to the ASX 200, and shows exactly how an index becomes something you can buy.

The ETF as a product

What is inside an ETF unit? Why do some pay franked distributions and others don't? What does hedged vs unhedged mean in practice? Eight short chapters on the product - before the machinery.

Inside the order book, minute by minute

Walk through a single ASX trading day from empty order book at dawn to closing auction at 4pm. Eleven chapters with interactive animations built around a live order book - the mechanics behind every price on a broker screen.

Watch a real ETF get built

Follow Platypus Capital from the idea stage through regulatory sign-off, market maker agreements, and the first day of trading. The complete picture of how an ETF goes from concept to ASX listing.

The Ranny

Answer the 'what if' questions that actually matter - flexible, easy-to-set comparisons backed by the full price and dividend history of every ASX ETF.

Compare two portfolios, risk and all

Set two ETF allocations and run them against identical contributions and the same rebalancing rule - everything fixed except the split. See which came out ahead and how much volatility each carried along the way. Real ASX closing prices and dividends, no projections.

Your schedule, your rules

Set each member's contribution dates and amounts separately - $3,000 on the 12th, your partner's $400 on the 14th and again on the 28th. Each dollar is invested at the actual closing price on its actual date, on its own schedule.

One rebalancing rule, run to the end

Define your drift threshold and your response - buy the lagging ETF with new money, or trim the winner. When a trim triggers a capital gains event, the model flags it and factors the tax cost into the comparison. A strategy that looks better before tax may not after it.

See every decision point

The model doesn't just show a start value and an end value. Every contribution, every rebalancing event, and every dividend payment is recorded as it happened - so you can see exactly where the two portfolios diverged and what caused it.

The answer is YES!

  • Can I learn how ETFs actually work - from creation to trading - without a finance degree?

  • Can I compare different ETF combinations side by side?
  • Can I see how much my broker's fee is actually costing me over time?

Questions

Is this financial advice? +

No. This is an educational resource and a historical modelling tool. It does not provide financial advice, personal recommendations, or portfolio management. All results are based on historical data and do not predict future performance. You should consult a licensed financial adviser before making investment decisions.

Can I use it for free? +

Yes. All the introductory books and select chapters are free - no sign-up needed. The Ranny tool is also free with popular ETFs and a 5-year data window. A one-time $89 payment unlocks everything for a full year.

What ETFs are available? +

Every ASX-listed ETF with at least 2 years of trading history - hundreds of them, covering Australian shares, international shares, bonds, and more. Currently ASX only, but other exchanges can be added in future - get in touch if that's something you'd use.

Why isn't the data live? +

This is a research and education tool, not a trading platform. Historical prices are what matter for answering long-term "what if" questions. Live prices add noise, not insight.

How does payment work? +

One payment of $89 gives you a full year of access. It's not a subscription - nothing auto-renews. If you need more time later, just pay again.

Who built this? +

Igor Kryltsov - a tech entrepreneur, applied mathematician, and SMSF trustee in Sydney. Not a financial adviser, not affiliated with any ETF provider. Just someone who had questions about his own super and couldn't find the answers. Read the full story.
